Maremma

The Maremma is a region between Tuscany and Lazio that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ligurian Sea, the name is derived,  from the Latin language marine. Dante identify the boundaries between Cecina and Tarquinia.

The coastal cities, the sea, the hills archaeological parks, the mountain and city of tufo.The Maremma is this.

The Maremma area is divided into 3 parts:

The Grosseto Maremma It is the central part  and is included, the coast between the Gulf of Follonica and the Argentario Promontory.
Among the main towns Grosseto,Follonica,Castiglioni della Pescaia,Porto Santo Stefano, and Massa Marittima with the historical centre on the top of a metalliferous hill. In the past was called Senese Maremma .



the Pisa Maremma or Livorno Maremma , it part of this area : main part of Livorno province and some part of Pisa province  which are located along the coast as Rosignano Marittimo and Piombino, and part of Val di Cecina,Val di Cornia and the metalliferous hill.
The main cities and village of this area are: Rosignano Marittimo, Cecina, Riparbella, Montescudaio, Guardistallo, Casale Marittimo, Bibbona, Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, Campiglia Marittima, Suvereto, San Vincenzo, Populonia


The Lazio Maremma: the south part that extends from the province of Viterbo till the north of province of Roma and along the coasts of the Lazio sea and till the area called Tuscia.The most important village are Vulci, Montalto di Castro, Canino, Tarquinia, Tuscania.


Maremma has known prehistoric  Etruscan and Roman presences, that left important historical and artistic testimonials, Important Etruscan cities as Populonia, Roselle e Vetulonia.

In medieval times the maremma has an very important tuscan family the Aldobrandeschi famous for the 100 castle that they had in this area in testimony to the development of this area especially in the hilly,
In that time there was also a Pope from the   Maremma area Gregorio VII.

The Maremma is one of the most beautiful and green  part of Tuscany, immersed in the green with a flora and fauna to be explored,with areas suitable for hiking and numerous  great trucks for  bikes.The Maremma is also distinguished for its excellent fine wine Morellino di Scansano and  the  excellent dishes of fish the excellent dishes of meat.

Definitely one of the most popular areas of Maremma is the Argentario  with the two beautiful villages of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole
an exclusive paradise where you can have a special relationship with the sea thanks to the numerous coves of the coast close to this 2 villages
the small, fortified village of Capalbio, the diamond of this coast.

Especially popular during the summer is the coast from Castiglioncello to reach Castiglione della Pescaia,with its perched village which overlooks the sea, from here it is very quick to get to the island of Giglio with its crystal clear sea and beautiful beaches.

Away from the coast you must visit the village of Manciano, with the remains of its castle and its walls. and the most famous Saturnia with its wonderful spa.
